Cmentarz Rakowicki założony został jako główna nekropolia Krakowa, zastępująca śródmiejskie cmentarze przykościelne, których zagrożenie epidemiologiczne dostrzegła nauka epoki Oświecenia. Powstał z dala od ówczesnych granic miasta, funkcjonował od stycznia 1803 r.
Kilkakrotnie powiększany, wzbogacony o utworzoną w 1920 r. nekropolię wojskową, cmentarz Rakowicki mający w 1803 r. 5,6 ha, dziś liczy 42 ha. Od 1976 r. wpisany jest do rejestru zabytków, a od 1981 na rzecz jego odbudowy urządzane są coroczne społeczne kwesty.
Wartościom historycznym Rakowickiej nekropolii towarzyszy fakt, iż owo przejrzyste świadectwo polskich losów na przestrzeni ubiegłych 200 lat to zarazem zabytkowe założenie parkowe o cennym drzewostanie i znakomitych dziełach małej architektury, rzeźbiarstwa i rzemiosła artystycznego.
Jest to zatem, niezależnie od swoich funkcji użytkowych, muzeum pod otwartym niebem.
Przedstawiana tu trasa zwiedzania obejmuje 22 punkty na starym cmentarzu i 8 na nekropolii wojskowej. Pełne jej obejście zamyka się w dwóch godzinach.

Rakowicki Cemetery was founded as the main Cracow's necropolis replacing several churchyards from the centre of the city that became a serious epidemiological threat which was recognised by the science of the Enlightenment Rakowicki Cemetery was opened far from the city’s boarders of that time and has functioned since January 1803.
Expanded several times, enlarged in 1920 with a war necropolis, Rakowicki Cemetery was increased from its 5,6 acres in 1803 to the present 42 hectares. In 1976 it was included into the Monuments Register, and since 1981 annual fund-raisings have been organised in order to collect the money for its restoration.
Not only is the Rakowice necropolis a testimony to Polish history of the previous 200 years, which makes it a place of a great historical value, but also an example of a historic garden cemetery with valuable stand and outstanding examples of small architecture, sculpture and craftsmanship.
The route around the cemetery presented here encompasses 22 sites in the old cemetery and 8 in the war necropolis. The whole route takes two hours.
